HOW TO SUCCEED IN IMMIGRATION COURT

Your immigration court hearing is approaching, how do you best prepare for it?

I will share three tips to help you succeed before the immigration judge.

First, understand the law and what you need to prove your case. Identify the reasons you are afraid to return to your country. Are your fears based on your religion, family, or another protected ground? These are crucial factors that can help you win your case. On the other hand, general crime, or lack of work in your country may not be enough to grant you protection. Understand what the law protects and focus on building a persuasive case around those grounds.

Second, memorize your statement. You have worked hard to write it, and it explains your fears and provides good examples.  Practice it until you feel confident.  You may get nervous in court and confused about the dates or details You do not want to contradict yourself during the hearing and make the judge think you are not telling the truth.

Third, practice questions with your lawyer, especially tough questions that the ICE attorney may ask. You want to get used to answering the questions and be prepared to respond in a convincing manner.

Remember, preparation is key to success in your immigration court hearing.
