You’ve Worked Hard. Now It’s Time to Take the Final Step
You’ve spent years living in the U.S.—working hard, paying taxes, and caring for your family. Now you’re ready for something more: becoming a U.S. citizen.
At Solovyova Law Firm, we’re here to help you every step of the way. Whether you’re applying for yourself or helping a family member, we make the process clear, simple, and respectful.
Why Should I Become a U.S. Citizen?
Becoming a citizen gives you more than just a passport. It gives you security, freedom, and opportunities to protect your family.
As a U.S. citizen, you can:
- Stay in the U.S. without fear of deportation
- Vote in elections and help make change in your community
- Get government jobs and benefits only for citizens
- Travel freely with a U.S. passport
- Help more of your family immigrate to the U.S.
- Pass citizenship to your children—even if they are born in another country
What Family Members Can I Help After I Become a Citizen?
Once you are a U.S. citizen, you can help your loved ones come to the U.S. legally by petitioning for them to get a green card.
You can petition for:
- Your spouse
- Your children (any age, married or unmarried)
- Your parents (if you’re at least 21 years old)
- Your brothers and sisters
Good to know: Spouses, parents, and children under 21 are considered immediate relatives, so their process is usually faster.
Who Can Apply for U.S. Citizenship?
You may qualify for citizenship if:
- You are 18 years or older
- You have had a green card for 5 years, or 3 years if you’re married to a U.S. citizen
- You have good moral character (no serious crimes)
- You can speak, read, and write basic English
- You can pass a U.S. civics test
- You’ve lived in the U.S. for most of the last 3–5 years

Common Questions About U.S. Citizenship
Do I need perfect English to pass the test?
No. You just need to speak, read, and write basic English. We’ll help you practice.
What if I have an arrest or an old immigration issue?
We’ll review your background honestly. In many cases, we can still help—or fix the problem first.
What if I fail the civics test?
Don’t worry. You get two chances to pass. We’ll help you study so you feel ready.
Can I travel while my application is pending?
Yes, but we’ll guide you. Too much travel could affect your case.
Understanding the U.S. Citizenship Test
To become a U.S. citizen, you need to pass two simple tests:
The Civics Test
- You will be asked up to 10 questions
- You need to answer at least 6 correctly
- Questions are about U.S. history and government
The English Test
- Speak a few basic sentences
- Read and write a simple sentence like: “The President lives in the White House.”
Are There Exemptions or Special Help?
Yes. You may qualify for a waiver or easier test if:
- You are over 50 or 55 years old and have lived in the U.S. for many years
- You have a medical condition that makes testing difficult
We can help you apply for these exceptions.
U.S. Citizenship Study Tips
Here are a few ways to make studying easier and feel more prepared:
- Use free USCIS study materials (we’ll help you find them)
- Study with a friend or family member
- Practice with someone who speaks English
- Watch videos or take a free online practice test

Your interview is the final step before becoming a citizen.
Here’s what to expect:
- Bring your documents and ID
- Dress neatly
- Be honest and calm
- Answer questions about your application and take your tests
- If you pass, you’ll be scheduled for your Oath Ceremony
